Knives History

The Reichstag Fire and Night of the Long Knives? History Knowledge Needed.?
Any information on the two.
Higher History.
Many Thanks. As Always.
Two thumbs down on a wikipedia reference? Say it isn’t so.
Here is what I know about the Reichstag fire.
There are no known surviving documents which link the Nazi party to this arson, but it is believed that the Nazi’s did start the fire. Apparently there was a tunnel which linked Goerrings ministry with the Reichstag, and there was also an arsonist who set several small fires after the initial fire was set. I don’t know his name, but I bet it is on Wikipedia.
The Night of the Long Knives (I guess this is the June 30th blood purge) was basically Hitler’s suppression of the SA. Hindenburg and the Army were very apprehensive of the SA and their brutal and violent tactics within Germany. Roehm had been continually advocating a second revolution- that is the implementation of the socialist points of the Nazi party (ie the nationalization of business and industry.) I believe the SA was something like 2 million strong at the time- which was a larger force than the Army. Hitler recognized that the Army was an established institution whose support he needed to carry out his political and military aims. Furthermore, Hindenburg was prepared to take the government away from Hitler, and declare Marshal Law and handing the government over to the Army. Essentially the Night of the Long Knives was Hitler’s opportunity to suppress the SA, win the support of the Army, and settle some old scores/remove political enemies of the Nazis.
Perhaps this is not the Higher History you were looking for. I would recommend Rise and Fall of the Third Reich. I don’t remember the author, but it is an excellent book. I don’t have it in front of me, otherwise I would provide you with those wonderful facts and insights you are perhaps looking for.
